MEVZA Youth Championships to run next week in Hungary

News from the Zonal Associations

Vienna, Austria, December 23, 2010. The 2010 MEVZA Youth Championships are set to take place in Debrecen, Hungary, and will run there through December 28-30. The boys’ competition (for players born in 1993 and thereafter) will be joined by the national teams of Hungary, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic and Slovakia. As for the girls, the competition is addressed to players born in 1994 or younger with two preliminary Pools starring The Netherlands, Czech Republic and Austria (Pool A) while Hungary, Slovakia and Romania will compete in Pool B. The “Oranjes” as well as Romania join the competition upon invitation as these countries are not affiliated to the Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association (MEVZA).
In the group stage of the competition only three sets will be played per match. Teams will get 3 points for a 3:0 win, 2 points for a 2:1 win, 1 point for a 1:2 loss, and 0 points for a 0:3 loss. The finals will be played with the traditional formula “best-of-five-sets”.
The tournament will be a good test for all teams as they prepare to join the qualification rounds for the 2011 CEV Youth European Championships that are coming up in early January across 10 different venues.
